The Right Lawyer for you
NOT A HIRED GUN
A lawyer is not a hired gun. He or she should be prepared to give you balanced, practical advice, not simply tell you what you want to hear. A lawyer should retain a degree of professional detachment in your relationship such that he or she can point your error out to you, fairly and sympathetically, but still tell you how it is.
NOT A COUNSELLOR
A lawyer will give you advice, but he or she it not your counsellor, in the sense of being a therapist. Using your lawyer in this way will prove dreadfully expensive and will interfere with what he or she needs to do for you.
NOT A FRIEND
Your lawyer is not your friend, though a good lawyer will have a friendly manner and be kind and sympathetic.
Pushing to relationship to friendship will probably result in longer conversations – and greater expense for you.
